More about Mouw's early years, starting teaching at Calvin (old campus) in 1968

"Calvin College transitioned from its Franklin Street campus to the Knollcrest campus in 1973. The move was necessitated by significant post-World War II growth and the limitations of the Franklin campus. The Knollcrest property, purchased in 1956, offered ample space for expansion and was designed by architect William Fyfe, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, in a style that integrated buildings with the natural landscape .

Mouw's own description (Adventures in Evangelical Civility, Fuller bio, and interviews):

"We moved to one of the poorest neighborhoods in Grand Rapids, buying a modest home on Worden Street. Our goal was to live intentionally among neighbors, host students, and support the local Christian school. It was a way to embody faith, hospitality, and community."

Fuller Seminary (starting 1985)

  • Mouw's salary as Fuller provost and later president was substantially higher than his Calvin salary.

  • With financial security, he moved into a wealthier, predominantly white suburban neighborhood.

  • This was a common choice for professional academics: larger homes, safer neighborhoods, better schools for children, and proximity to colleagues and social networks.

there's a clear tension between Richard Mouw's early "intentional community" framing at Calvin and his later move to a wealthy, predominantly white suburb once he had the means.

  • At Calvin: He lived in an urban, lower-income neighborhood, framed as a faithful experiment in solidarity. But it was also financially necessary.

  • At Fuller: With a much higher salary and an adult son no longer needing schools, Mouw moved to affluent, mostly white Pasadena neighborhoods, aligning with what some would call classic "white flight" behavior—leaving urban, lower-income areas as soon as it was financially viable.

This is why critics can describe it as hypocrisy or at least a moral tension: the ideals of urban solidarity and engagement with the marginalized were no longer practiced in daily life once the family's financial and social situation improved.

  • It doesn't necessarily invalidate his scholarly or theological work, but it does reveal a dissonance between early-life ideals and later-life lifestyle choices.

MOUW TURNS AGAINST BETSY: "Betsy DeVos, Underperformer"

"Richard Mouw, a prominent Evangelical intellectual, met DeVos through church and was more than happy to write a recommendation to the Senate at her request, he says. "I thought she was a breath of fresh air." But after he's seen her in action these past six months, his enthusiasm has dissipated. "Oh, gosh," reflects Mouw, "I've been kind of disappointed in her positions" — especially on the disabled and the poor...."

Among Christians, "advancing God's kingdom" is a euphemism for helping the poor, serving the afflicted, and in general bringing some degree of God's love, mercy, and justice to a hurting world. When Betsy DeVos championed education reform in this way, she wasn't pushing for an established religion, she was telling Christians that school choice will help the poor and satisfy Jesus Christ's command that we should love one another.

NOW WE KNOW that RICHARD MOUW is a FLAMING LIBERAL " Trump Presidency Victory: Response From Christian Leaders" | Gospelherald.com

I think he has hid it or suppressed it for so long, or at least made sure not to advertise it, that people never knew for sure. & given he started out teaching at Calvin College & affiliated with the CRC (both conservative in general) I assumed he was conservative as well.  But this comment makes it quite clear he's not, but quite the opposite:

"Richard J. Mouw who is President emeritus and professor of faith and public life, Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California, shared, "Given my political preferences, my feelings right now border on despair. But I also know that people whom I admire—even love—voted for Mr. Trump. How do we talk together now about the deeper issues without mutual accusations? What hopes and fears accompanied us into the voting booths? How do we love each other in continuing to work together in the service of the only true and righteous King?"

    WELCOME

WELCOME,..some of u already know who Richard Mouw is...in general..u have heard he was the president of fuller seminary...a former phhilosophy professor at calvin college,...did a few things at the free university in amsterdam, etc.   well, thats all good, but I know Mouw a little better from seeing him in action in Grand Rapids (when he was teaching at calvin, and also a member of our church with his family) and then later when he was teaching at Fuller (while also president)...and he writes articles, publishes books, tried especially to reach out to mormons, and now apparently catholics, and most recently i saw him speak at the missiology lectures at fuller.

Last year he spoke at calvin's january series, and now apparently he's back teaching a class at fuller, after retiring from the presidency, and a stint teaching at pepperdine. He just keeps POPPING UP when u thought he might be getting tired, and ready for some R&R, and a comfortable retirement.

What makes him tick? That's my question..my quest to find out. One thing that surprised me when I came to fuller from calvin seminary ...i assumed he was a traditional Christian, but then found out he allegedly is a "physicalist", and doesn't actually believe in soul (similar to one of his colleagues, nancey murphy, with whom I am at odds ). Mouw doesnt advertise his position on soul. He relies on people assuming he's a traditional guy , traditional CHristian, that is.

I had to dig deep to discover this, accidentally for that matter, and its buried so deep I still say "allegedly"...and i will post links to that evidence here in the near future.

but for now I decided I needed to keep a blog about Mouw because he shouldn't be taken for granted by traditional Christians. We need to keep him accountable. Not to say he's living a bad life or anything scandalous . But do we REALLY know what he truly believes down deep, beyond all the "psycho babble" or "philosophy babble" as it may be.

If he's not really a true blue traditional Christian, per Reformed doctrine, it's a bit concerning to me. At least he should say it, not try to keep it below the radar . If he's teaching our young people ,most of whom come to seminary as trusting young Christians , we have a right to know what our teachers truly believe.

And yet he won't answer to me. He's old school and if I were to get point blank with him he would call me a "punk" or "too big for my britches" (he might even act scared & call police, even though I can assure you I am not a danger to anybody) despite the fact that I have a lot of education (BA/BA/M.DIV),even if not a lofty doctorate like him.

And yet a doctorate is not proof of what one truly believes. One is from the head, the other is from the heart.

Anyways, because he has been so close to my tradition for so long I want to believe the best about him, and hope I am able to confirm the best, not the suspicions otherwise.

So for the time being, lacking lots of evidence one way or the other, I will simply keep him on the radar and see what happens. For some reason he doesn't want to ride off into the sunset. He still has "something to prove". What will he prove? We'll find out. I hope.
